Before and after, rated

Glow up check: did people notice the change?

A glow up check on RATE is a fair test: a recent "before" photo and an "after" photo, posted as two separate posts, each rated 1 to 10 by real people. Compare the scores and see who noticed. Both photos must show you as an adult.

How to do a glow up check on RATE

You changed something: your hair, your skin, your style, your brows, the way you train. Friends say "you look amazing", which is sweet and useless, because friends would say it anyway. A glow up check puts the question to people who have never seen you and don't know which photo is the old one.

On RATE each post gets its own score, and people rate a post as one even when it holds up to 4 photos. So the test is two posts, not one post with two pictures:

  • Pick a "before" from the last few months, taken as an adult, that shows how you looked before the change. If you don't have one, take it today and start the change after.
  • Take the "after" in the same light, from the same distance and angle, with a similar expression.
  • Post them as two separate posts, close together in time, so a similar crowd rates both.
  • Rate other people while you wait. It helps your own posts get seen more.
  • Once both posts show a score, compare the averages and the breakdowns.

What a glow up check can test

Almost any visible change works, as long as you test one thing at a time. If you change your hair, your makeup and your lighting in the same photo, a higher score can't tell you which one did it.

  • A haircut or a new color: bangs, a bob, going lighter or darker.
  • Makeup: a new everyday look, or no makeup against your usual one.
  • Skincare: a few months of a routine, photographed in the same window light.
  • Brows: shaped, laminated, grown out.
  • Glasses against contacts, or a new frame against the old one.
  • Style: a different color palette, a new way of dressing, a signature piece.
  • Fitness: posture and energy show in a photo long before anything else does.

Keep the comparison fair

The most common mistake is a flattering "after" against a careless "before": a phone-flash snapshot at night versus a golden-hour portrait. The score will go up, but you'll have measured the photo, not the glow up. Keep everything the same except the change you're testing.

  • Same light: a window in daytime works in any home.
  • Same angle and distance: camera at eye level, an arm's length or more.
  • Same framing: both head and shoulders, or both full length.
  • Same expression and the same amount of effort.
  • No filters on either photo. A smoothed "after" is a different person.
  • Wait until each post shows its score before you compare, and look for a clear gap. A tiny difference can be chance.

Read your glow up results by audience

An average is the headline, and the breakdowns are the story. Each post shows how its score splits by the raters' age group, gender, country and cultural background. A change can land hard with one group and barely register with another: a sharp new haircut might win with women your age and leave men unmoved, or the other way around.

Your main score counts the people you choose to match with, so if you match with men, you're comparing what men think of each post. If you'd rather hear from everyone and never match, choose "Match me with: No one". RATE Gold adds trends over time and more breakdowns, which is handy if you plan to check in on a long change like skincare or training every couple of months.

Adult photos only: the 18+ rule

RATE is for adults 18 and over, and that applies to both halves of your glow up check. Your "before" must be a recent photo of you as an adult, never a school photo or a picture from your teens. Every photo is checked before it goes live, and photos that look under 18 are taken down. Comparing yourself now with yourself at 15 isn't a glow up anyway: it's growing up, and everyone does it.

The same check keeps the feed honest for you too: a real person's face, no nudity, no screenshots, no AI images. Ratings are anonymous, there are no comments, and nobody can message you unless you rate each other 8 or higher or follow each other.

A glow up is about feeling good, and a score is one photo

If the "after" scores higher, enjoy it: strangers noticed what you worked on. If it doesn't, don't undo the change. A score is how one group of people received one photo on one day, and plenty of glow ups are about how you feel walking out the door, not about a number. Try a fairer pair of photos, or check the breakdowns: the change may have landed with exactly the audience you care about.

How RATE works

  1. Post up to 4 photosClear, recent photos of you. Every photo is checked before it goes live.
  2. Real people rate them 1 to 10Anonymously. No names, no likes, no comments. Just an honest number.
  3. See your score and who rates you highestYour average, plus breakdowns by age group, gender and country. Rate each other 8+ and it is a match.

Questions

Can I use a photo from high school as my "before"?

No. RATE is 18+ and photos that look under 18 are taken down. Use a recent photo of yourself as an adult, or take the "before" today and start the change after it.

Why post the before and after as separate posts?

Because people rate a post as one, even if it has up to 4 photos. Two photos in one post get one shared score, which tells you nothing about the change. Two posts get two scores you can compare.

Do raters know which photo is the before?

No. Each post appears in the feed on its own, with nothing telling raters it's a before or an after, and there are no comments. People simply rate what they see.

What if my after photo scores lower?

First check the photos were a fair pair: same light, angle and framing. Then look at the breakdowns, because a change can win with one audience and lose with another. A lower score is about one photo, not a verdict on your glow up or on you.

How long until I can compare the scores?

A score appears once enough people have rated the post, so a couple of opinions never decide it. Rating other people while you wait helps your own posts get seen more.
