Hot or Not, rebuilt for today
Hot or Not was the early 2000s website where strangers rated your photo 1 to 10. RATE takes that simple, honest idea and turns it into a modern app, with checked 18+ people, anonymous scores and the stats behind them.
What was Hot or Not?
Hot or Not was a website from the early 2000s built around one question. You uploaded a photo of yourself, and strangers rated it on a scale of 1 to 10. You could rate other people's photos too, one after another, as fast as you could click. People still search for it as one word, hotornot, the way it looked in the address bar.
It caught on because it answered something most of us quietly wonder: how do I come across to people who don't know me? Friends are kind, family is biased, and you are your own harshest critic. A stranger with no reason to flatter you felt like an honest answer. Years later, the name is still shorthand for any quick verdict on looks.
Looking for a Hot or Not app today?
The question hasn't gone anywhere, but the way we share photos has changed. RATE is a photo rating app built on the same core idea: you post photos of yourself, and real people rate each post 1 to 10. What's new is everything around that number: who is allowed to rate, how the score comes together, and what you learn from it.
RATE isn't connected to the original Hot or Not website, and it isn't a copy of it. Think of it as the same honest question with better tools around it: adults only, anonymous ratings, and results you can actually learn from.
What is different on RATE
Here is what RATE adds to the old formula, and why each piece matters when the person in the photo is you.
- Anonymous ratings, no comments. Nobody sees your name next to a score, and there are no likes or comment threads to pile on. Raters don't see who rated whom.
- Real people only. RATE is for ages 18+, and every photo is checked before it goes live: it must clearly show a real person's face, with no nudity, no screenshots and no AI images.
- Up to 4 photos in a post. People rate the set, so your score rests on more than one lucky or unlucky frame. Want to compare two looks? Post them separately: every post gets its own score.
- A score only after enough ratings. Your score appears once enough people have rated the post, so one or two opinions never decide it.
- Stats on who rates you highest. Your results break down by the raters' age group, gender, country and cultural background.
- Mutual 8+ matches. A high rating doesn't vanish into the void: if two people rate each other 8 or higher, a private chat opens.
Why 1 to 10 says more than hot or not
Despite the name, attraction isn't a switch that flips from hot to not. Most of us get a mix: plenty of middle scores, and some people who see us as a 9. That spread is the interesting part. A yes or no vote hides it; a 1 to 10 scale shows it.
RATE also lets the right audience set your score. Your score counts the people you choose to match with, so if you match with women, it's women's ratings of you. The number reflects the people you care about, not everyone who happened to scroll past. And because it only appears after enough ratings, it's an average of many opinions, not one person's mood.
Whatever the number says, keep one thing in mind: a score is what a group of strangers thought of one photo on one day. It is not a verdict on your worth, and a different photo can tell a different story.
Rate me: hot or not? How to get an honest answer
If you're ready to ask the old question again, give people a fair photo to judge. Small details move a score more than most people expect.
- Stand near a window in daylight, facing it or turned slightly. Soft window light is kinder to almost everyone than a ceiling bulb or a flash.
- Hold the camera at eye level or a little above. Shots from below the chin are rarely anyone's best angle.
- Use a real expression. A relaxed half smile usually reads warmer than a blank stare or a forced grin.
- Lead with your clearest face shot, then add a half-body photo and one of you doing something you enjoy.
- Skip heavy filters and face-editing apps. People rate the person they would meet, and heavily edited photos tend to look off.
- Rate other people while you wait. Rating the photos in your feed helps your own photos get seen more.
From one-way votes to mutual matches
On RATE, a high rating can lead somewhere, but only when it goes both ways. If you rate someone 8, 9 or 10 and they rate you 8 or higher back, it's a mutual match and a private chat opens. You both already know the other likes how you look, so nobody has to guess where they stand.
Matching is optional. If you're only here for honest feedback, set "Match me with" to "No one" and just rate and get rated. Posting, rating, matching and chatting are free. RATE Gold, an optional subscription, shows you who rated you 8+ and adds deeper stats, like trends over time.
How RATE works
- Post up to 4 photosClear, recent photos of you. Every photo is checked before it goes live.
- Real people rate them 1 to 10Anonymously. No names, no likes, no comments. Just an honest number.
- See your score and who rates you highestYour average, plus breakdowns by age group, gender and country. Rate each other 8+ and it is a match.
Questions
Is RATE the same as Hot or Not?
No. RATE is a separate app made by Kelvera, Inc., and it isn't connected to Hot or Not. It shares the basic idea of real people rating photos 1 to 10, and adds anonymous results, audience stats and mutual matches.
Will people see how I rated them?
No. Ratings are anonymous, and raters never see who rated whom. A high rating is revealed in two cases only: when you both rate each other 8 or higher, or when the person you rated has RATE Gold, which shows who rated them 8+.
Why can't I see my score right away?
A score shows once enough people have rated your post. Waiting for more opinions means one harsh or generous rater can't decide your number. RATE Gold members see their own score sooner.
Do I have to use RATE for dating?
No. Choose "No one" under "Match me with", and you can still post, rate and see all your results, without ever being matched with anyone.
Where can I get rated hot or not today?
On RATE. Open app.rate-app.com on your phone and add it to your home screen: it works on iPhone, Android and computers, and it's also on Google Play. Posting, rating, matching and chatting are free; RATE Gold is optional.
